Virtual University Events: Questions Worth Asking
THE STUDY ABROAD MONITOR | DIGITAL EDUCATION GUIDE
A university webinar can be a convenient way to explore courses across borders. Its real value, however, lies in whether students can distinguish useful institutional information from a promotional presentation.
Who is actually speaking?
A webinar may feature an admissions officer, academic representative, recruitment partner or event host. Their roles can overlap, but they do not carry identical authority. A marketing host may have detailed knowledge of a programme without being able to issue an academic decision.
Ask the organiser to identify speakers, affiliations and whether the institution officially supports the session. For important details, such as entry requirements or scholarships, request links to the current university page rather than relying only on verbal answers.
Prepare for the decisions you need to make
Students often join online events with broad questions such as ‘Can I study there?’ A more useful approach is to prepare a shortlist of programmes and identify unresolved eligibility, fee and support questions.
Note the particular intake, course level and personal qualification when asking questions. A reply about one master’s programme may not apply to a different undergraduate course at the same institution.
Look beyond the slide deck
Slides can explain opportunities quickly but may omit exclusions, conditions or changes that apply to individual applicants. Ask whether tuition examples include compulsory charges and whether scholarships are competitive or automatically considered.
For accommodation, careers support and student services, request concrete policies or contact channels. A claim that ‘support is excellent’ is less useful than a clear description of the service and who can access it.
Recorded sessions require context
A webinar published months later may contain out-of-date deadlines or fees. Viewers need to know when it took place and whether the host has updated material that is no longer valid.
If a session was sponsored or organised to generate applications, that relationship should be visible. Promotional status does not make every statement false, but it changes how the material should be interpreted.
Protect personal details in the Q&A
Public chat boxes are not suitable for uploading passports, bank records or complete immigration histories. An admissions representative may need some personal context, but sensitive documents should move only through verified official processes.
If an answer requires detailed assessment, request a secure follow-up channel and ask what specific information the institution needs. Do not disclose more than necessary merely to receive attention during a live session.
The right outcome is a clearer decision
After the webinar, write down what was confirmed, what was presented as a possibility and what requires further verification. Follow official links before paying fees or submitting an application.
The Study Abroad Monitor treats university sessions as potential sources of information and interview opportunities, not as substitute evidence for independent reporting.
